Converting Living Dragonstar Characters

A voice in the darkness, “Good morning Abe.”

A voice, rusty from disuse, “Good… morning?”

“Would you like to come back with us, Abe? Back to the living?”

“Living…? I’m… dead?”

“Yes. And have been for a long time. We need you here, Abe. Will you join us?”

“Uhh… join. Yes.”

“Good. We don’t have much time. Swear upon your eternal soul to assist us in our task, and you can live again.”

“What? Swear…?”

“Hurry, Abe, this won’t last. Life or death, yes or no?”

“Life. Yes. I swear…”

A gut-wrenching twist of reality that smears the surrounding blackness with drunken colour shakes the uneasy spirit as it responds to the last, and then the darkness returns again.

Two voices are heard as reedy whispers, “He’s done it. We can proceed.”

“Good. We need all of them. Their help is vital.”

The first voice returns, “Thank you, Abe. This will feel… a little strange.”

A different twist this time, with a kaleidoscope of colours spiraling into a single point before exploding into a riot of senses reawakend.

Abe sits up into a sparsely furnished room. The door opens, and a thin, white-haired man in a green robe steps through.

“I’m glad you’re with us. I was worried for a moment there; I must be getting old.” He mops his forehead with the sleeve of his robe, “In any event, I’m sure you have questions, so let me answer a few of them while you get your voice back.”

He pulls over a chair, sits down on it, and looks directly at Abe. “We know that several millenia ago, there was a great civilization in a galaxy a long ways off. You were part of that civilization, or if not, we missed.”

The man chuckles.

“In any event, that galaxy suffered a catastrophic explosion which instantly wiped out all life, all unlife, and virtually all the matter in the nearby regions of space. The reason we’re trying to bring the people who lived there back to life? Well, it’s not pure philanthropy, as I’m sure you can guess, although extending the lives that were cut short is a definite perk to this job. We have these prophecies, you see, that someone fairly important was going to come from your galaxy to fix some things, and we were, understandably I think, upset that the whole thing had gone kablam. We also have some unfriendly neighbours, as I understand it, and no one here knows how to use the ships they seem to have so carelessly left lying about. Now, hopefully you’re tech-savvy enough to help us with that?”

The ancient face looks hopefully at Abe for a moment, but then shakes his head, “No, don’t answer that. Time enough yet. The people here will all try to help you out, if you ask, but don’t expect too much. It’s getting a little excitable out there, and people are getting tetchy. You just sleep for a bit, and I’ll drop in a bit later to see how you’re getting on.”

Old bones creak as the man gets up to leave, and again as he turns back to look at Abe, “One last thing, many of your predecessors have some kind of resurrection sickness. They confuse their mythologies and legends with reality, whole thing blurs together. Just a warning that not everything you remember at first may be real or right.”

The door swings shut behind him as the old man laughs to himself. “Dragons. Ha!”

Any character which had been played in at least one official Living Dragonstar® module for which you have a valid log sheet is eligible for conversion into the StarMage Prophecies. All conversions must be overseen, validated and signed by a Gamemaster, and all questions may be directed to rulesgremlin@starmage.info.

Your character has been resurrected in a distant galaxy some years in the future. You have been told that your galaxy was destroyed in a colossal explosion, and that these people have been resurrecting various people that used to live there in hopes that one of you would be the legendary Star Mage.

To convert a character, use the Character Creation Guidelines to create a “new” character which shares the name and race of your old character. The mechanics between the two campaigns differ enough that all other details of the character may be reworked as necessary. The character may maintain their previous experience total, but all items, favours, enhancements etc. are lost. If, given that their character has just been resurrected, any player still feels that their character may have a chance of retaining any one or more of the aforementioned items, they may contact rulesgremlin@starmage.info to plead their case. Specious arguments will not be tolerated.

Soulmech characters are resurrected into their original bodies. If this was indeterminate when the prior campaign ended, choose any viable race.

Characters of races not listed in the CCG should email a campaign staff member.

There are enough radical differences between D&D and D20 that certain characters may find that their effectiveness and/or flavour are significantly degraded. Because of this, any converted character may, at the player’s discretion, receive an amount of bonus experience less than or equal to the amount required to reach that character’s next level at the time of conversion.

All converted characters, having lost all wealth and worldly possessions, are given a kit by the Haizmond Benevolent Society, but have a Wealth bonus of +0. The kit includes the following:

  • Backpack
  • Bedroll
  • Belt Pouch
  • Bolts (20)
  • Caltrops (25)
  • Compass
  • Dagger
  • Flint & Steel
  • Hemp Rope (50′)
